Genao Residence
Location: Astoria, Queens
Project: House extension
Completion: 2003
Construction: $50,000
General Contractor: Jepol Construction
Located in Astoria, New York, this 2-storey extension of an existing residence re-interprets the typical cluster of semi-detached houses and backyard buildings found in the neighborhood.
While maintaining the character of the traditional clapboard house, the new volume adds openness and spatial complexity to the building. The structure maximizes the building volume on the lot, with a courtyard void and angled walls allowing for a maximum of daylight to penetrate. Strategically placed windows and wall openings create unexpected views and functional relations between the different areas of the house and the exterior.
The new quarters serve as the center of family activity and add a separate sleeping area in the upper floor. To meet the extremely limited budget, we decided to only provide the exterior shell and room layout, so the owner could complete all flooring, appliances and finishes himself.
