Euro Design Homes
Location: San Juan, Puerto Rico
Project: Conversion of a warehouse in to a design showroom
Completion: 2001
Construction: $300,000
General Contractor: Santiago Metal
Located at the intersection of two main avenues in San Juan, Puerto Rico, this former warehouse for car parts was converted into the new flagship store of Euro Design Homes, a distributor and manufacturer of kitchens, bathrooms, furniture and stone counters.
The building merges Puerto Rican vernacular with the metropolitan character of the products on display.
Inspired by the ornamental metal latticework and bright colors found through out the island, all the new building elements are wrapped in metal screens and painted in reflective colors to filter the intense Caribbean light.
Curbed perforated aluminum panels with cut out openings articulate the most prominent corner of the building, creating a constantly changing interface between inside and outside, private and public. At night these openings serve as a back projected displays for advertisement and entertainment for bypassing traffic. During hurricanes, the screen also functions as a protective shield for the large glass openings behind.
