Mc Grath Apartment
Location: West Village, New York
Project: Interior renovation
Completion: 2003
Construction: $90,000
General Contractor: Jepol Construction
This Chelsea apartment was converted from a typical railroad layout into a flexible work and living space. All existing room partitions were removed to create an uninterrupted open area, allowing for a maximum of natural light to enter the length of the apartment. The loft-like front area holds the more public functions of the apartment whereas the back contains the private bath and bedroom.
Integrated sliding doors and furniture enhance the linearity and verticality of the space. The built-in closets disappear behind translucent glass doors and pocket doors in combination with integrated Murphy bed furniture allow for the temporary installation of a second bedroom. A custom-built stainless steel kitchen with concealed appliances can be fully enclosed when required. The extremely small existing bathroom was remodeled into a condensed box of blue stone, mosaic and translucent glass, efficient and atmospheric at the same time.
